Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher

When the substitute for Mr. "Fab" Fabiano never shows up and his sixth grade students are on their own, they set out to prove that they can run the class by themselves. Rachel, one of the students, having chosen to be mute following the sudden death of a classmaate, shares this responsibility with the other sixth-graders. Slowly, we meet and learn a lot about each of the other classmates.

In a few sentences, tell me who you think is the most important character in the book and why you feel this way.

  1. I think the most important character is Rachel. Rachel lost her voice because she thought she was guilty of killing a student in her class. When the substitute doesn't come for Mr. Fabiano, the class has to teach themselves. So I think Rachel actually might have to find her voice to help the class get through this.

  2. I think that the most important character is mr.Fab because will he is out sick the class will learn to be more responsible. Also because the kids might see how it feels to be responsible for a big class.Maybe when Mr.Fab comes back he will be very proud of them.

  3. I think the most important character is Morgan because he found out that the class has no teacher. The class is counting on him not to tell. If he does tell Mr.Fab will probably be mad at his class because they didn't tell anyone. That's why I think Morgan is the most important character.

  6. I think Karen is the most important character in the story because she was supposed to tell the people at the office that Mr. Fabiano’s class didn’t have a teacher or a substitute. If Karen had told the people at the office that the class didn’t have a substitute, then the class would have a substitute and have a more normal day at class. If Karen hadn’t said to her classmates that it would be cool for them to teach their class, then someone else would have told the workers at the office. Finally, if Karen had told the people at the office that the class needed a substitute, then there wouldn’t have much of a story.

  7. I think Karen is the most important character because she is leading the class as the day goes on. Not only is she confident they can make it through the day, she is watching out for teachers in case someone sees them unattended in class. She makes sure the class is in order as everything goes on and is trying her hardest to get everything done Mr. Fabiano assigned for the substitute.

  8. I think Sean is the most important character because he really seems to be having a hard time with his father at home. I think he will go mad or somehow get hurt because his father`s a drunk.

  9. I think the most important person in Fling Solo is the class president. I think that because she is keeping the class from going wild and letting the teachers know that they don't have a teacher! She is also getting the class to specials and lunch on time.

  11. I think Rachel is the most important character because she is involved in many of the activities. The book started off with Tommy liking her, but then he died in his sleep. Rachel felt it was her fault because she did not want the pie he offered the day before he died. Now she feels guilty and no longer speaks. I think she will have an effect in some way on a future event in the story, and might even speak.

  12. I think the most important character is Christopher's mother because she is the person who knocked the note from the substitute teacher into the radiator while she was leaving the school. If she did not do that then the story would not be very interesting, because the class would have a teacher and it would be a normal day.

  13. I think the most important character is Bastian because he is moving to Hawaii and his dog is going to be quarantined in Hawaii. I have a feeling that he is going to have to go back to the school because his dad business and he will solve a problem in school and he solves it.

  14. I think Karen is the most important character because she is most like the leader of the class when Mr.Fab is gone. she was the one who said that there was nothing else for her to tell them at the front office, and if she had said that they had no teacher in their class room there would not be a big story.

  15. I think Rachel is the most important character because Rachel is mentioned a lot in the story and i think that voise of hers is somewere deep inside of her and she wants to let it out but she just cant. Also I think she thinks that she caused Tommy Feathers to die because she did not take the pie the day befor he died, maybe she thinks he died of sadness.

  17. I think Rachel is the most important character because the story mentions that Rachel yells at her parents to stop fighting. The next day her father decides to move to New Mexico. Rachel is very emotionally scarred because of what happened to her parents, and a boy in her class came over to Rachel's house one day to give her a pie, but Rachel rudely rejected it. The next morning her friend Missy called to say that Tommy Feathers had died in his sleep. After Missy told Rachel about the incident Rachel lost her voice.
